Visual and Performing Arts
Overview and Philosophy
The Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) program which includes Art and Media, Drama, Ceramics, Woodworking and Music, allows student to explore a variety of forms of creative expression. They have opportunities to think, build, create, and perform, building confidence in self-expression in a variety of artistic media. In addition to giving all students confidence and facility in the arts studied, all skills learned in VPA support other aspects of the academic experience, including public speaking and presentation skills, critical thinking, information analysis, application of technology, construction skills, and visual information processing. Exposure to a wide variety of creative forms allows students to discover their own personal strengths and preferences while developing facility in different media. VPA allows each student an opportunity to develop, hone, and explore her own creative voice.
The Arts program at GMS provides both skills and confidence for girls to appreciate and enjoy making art throughout their lives. One goal of the Arts program at GMS is for art to remain a joyful experience with a curriculum that includes a balance between active creation, analytical skills and a supportive environment. GMS students learn how to analyze images, explore new media, build skills and confidence, and develop personal vision. An environment where each girl feels the freedom to express her own creativity without fear of judgment is essential to building a positive self-image as an artist. Students learn that every artist has a unique perspective and each will express her view of the world in a unique way.
Art at GMS is not assessed in the same format as other classes. Feedback for students takes place in class, encouraging students to push personal boundaries with challenges appropriate to their level of skill. Teachers and students all participate in creating a safe, supportive environment, freeing students to take creative risks and to leap into new worlds of self-expression without fear. Students learn to trust their own intuition as well as utilize their evolving creative skills for effective expression of their ideas.
