Course Description

6th grade Spanish for Fluent Speakers is a course designed to provide beginning Spanish for fluent students with a solid foundation in the four major language skill categories: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The goal is to promote an understanding and clear appreciation of the Hispanic culture. 6th grade students are involved in a community of practice on advanced conversations, to describe the immediate environment, and to ask and answer questions using learned grammatically correct phrases and expressions.

At the end of 6th grade, students will be proficient by applying vocabulary, some spelling rules and constructed grammar structures in oral and written assignments and projects. Students will explore different kind of texts, story tales, fiction, anecdotes, legends and short plays through reading, writing and oral presentations.

6th grade student will read three books, newspaper and online articles, comment the reading material, write summaries and prepare oral presentations. Students also will engage in two research projects: The Spanish Origin and a Free Topic Research Project. In addition, the use of Rosetta Stone online and different technology activities will complement a fun and rich learning environment.

Units of Study:

Unit 1: Spanish Origin

Students investigate, learn and reflect in how the Spanish language became so widely spoken, where did it originate, and how did it spread across the globe to be spoken in so many countries, by so many people today. 6th graders connect language and culture by learning how Spanish language has one of the richest and longest histories of any of the world's languages. Students read and comment the book, “Me llamo María Isabel.” On the grammar aspect, they immerse themselves by studying the parts of speech, and diverse spelling rules.

Unit 2: Day of The Dead Celebration

This unit focuses on an ancient indigenous Mexican holiday and it has the objective of enriching cultural appreciation, values and traditions from other cultures. Students also make linguistic and cultural observations by interacting directly with hand on activities while they prepare for the ceremony of The Day of the Dead. 6th grade students write a book summary and have an oral presentation. On the grammar aspect, students are involved in a writing workshop where they exercise the use and application of connective words, spelling rules etc.

Unit 3: The Story Tale

In this unit, students are introduced to characteristics of story tales that help them to develop an appreciation of this genre of Latino American fiction. Students read the fantasy book, “Tulia y la Tecla Mágica,” and they practice writing summaries from information they have gathered and organized. Some tales are fantastic and others are more realistic. Students also plan and write their own story tales. On the grammar aspect, students are involved in a writing workshop where they exercise the present, past and future tenses.

Unit 4: Culture and Language Connection with The Real World

6th grade students reflect about language how the key component of culture. It is the primary medium for transmitting much of culture. Without language, culture would not be possible. Students learning their native language are learning their own culture; learning a second language also involves learning a second culture to varying degrees. Therefore, students read and comment different newspaper articles connected with the real world and work in teams by created a TV News Show. On the grammar aspect, students are engaged in a writing workshop where they learn the rules for accents in words.

Unit 5: Poetry

Students engage on hand on activities by learning diverse techniques for memorizing and performing a Spanish language poem in front of the group. Students also are guided with grammar tools in a writing workshop by learning how to put accents in words and solidifying their spelling abilities

Unit 6: Writing an Anecdote

In this unit, 6th grade students engage in diverse real and fictional stories include in two different books that create magic and a sense of wonder at the world. Stories and personal anecdotes can teach students about life, about us and about others. Storytelling is a unique way for students to develop an understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures, and can promote a positive attitude to people from different lands, races and religions. On the grammar aspect, students are immersing in a writing workshop where they answer questionnaires, and exercise the use of punctuation.

Unit 7: Research Project and Oral Performances

In this unit, 6th grade students have the individual opportunity to connect with the Spanish language with different subjects and activities outside the classroom by selecting a research project. Each student can focus in a topic, investigate, write and create a keynote oral presentation. Consequently, 6th grade students learn the parts of a theater play, dramatize different dialogues, write a brief script and perform the play in front of class.

Course Description

The seventh-grade Spanish for Fluent Speakers course is designed to introduce students to Latin American and Chicano literature. The main goal is to further develop the students’ writing, reading, and communication skills. The students learn, understand, and practice Spanish grammar by writing responses to their reading assignments and by completing specific grammar and orthographic exercises. They enrich their vocabulary by reading and participating during class discussions. By reading and understanding different points of view and writing styles, students are encouraged to use their creativity to create their own stories and to make connections between the units of study and their immediate world. In addition, students are introduced to aspects of history, geography, and culture of different Latin-American countries.

Course Description

Eighth-grade Spanish for Fluent Speakers course introduces students to both Peninsular and Latin-American literature and has been designed to refine and further develop the students’ proficiency in the Spanish language as well as promote and improve analytic and critical thinking skills. Students learn, understand, and practice Spanish grammar by writing responses to their reading assignments and enrich their vocabulary by reading and participating in class discussions. The main goals of this class are to develop the capacity in each student to familiarize herself with the world beyond her own by critically analyzing different pieces of literature and to impart the understanding that the written word is an orderly reproduction of the writer’s thoughts. Students are encouraged to use their creativity and understanding of the reading assignments to find their own writing style.
